Success Is Counted Sweetest – Emily Dickinson

This poetry got me thinking…..  Life is ironic like that. Emily describes the strange fact that you have to be denied something before you can truly appreciate it.
The things we desire the most are not easy to get. Have we ever stopped to consider that all the wanting might actually be a good thing.
In the last stanza she goes on to say just like the dying soldier understands the victory much more than he surviving comrades. His comrades are happy with the victory but since he has laid down his life he understands it much better.
Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne’er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.
Not one of all the purple Host
Who took the Flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of victory
As he defeated – dying –
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!
